PHSE & Personal Development Our Year 9-13 Personal Development curriculum

Our aim is for every student to be able to move seamlessly from LeAF Studio into employment, professional performance, or university, equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding to purposefully engage in all of the challenges and opportunities they will experience.

In order to support this transition, Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education provides our student athletes and performers with the opportunity to explore a range of topics including financial management, interview technique and communication with employers, effective social media use, and managing adversity using performance psychology strategies. Along with topics such as Healthy Relationships, Sex Education, Physical Health and Mental Wellbeing, we also support every student in year 10 organising a one-week work experience placement.

As well as schemes of work based on the online JIGSAW resource and the PSHE association, Personal Development includes workshops and assemblies from various external agencies (eg. Dorset Police), through which students learn about the Prevent strategy and British Values, and courses from the International Olympic Committee on topics such as Safeguarding Athletes and Performers in performance settings and nutrition and hydration planning for optimal performance.

Underpinning this approach are our weekly Health & Wellbeing Surveys, which encourage every student athlete and performer to reflect on a weekly basis upon their current level of training and performance, along with levels of stress, mental health, fatigue and muscle soreness. Increasing their self-awareness as well as communicating concerns to their support network provides our student athletes and performers with a greater likelihood of positive mental health alongside consistent training and works to minimise the possibility of illness and injury.

LeAF are happy to share RSHE resources relevant to your child’s year group. If you would like access to our RSHE resources, please email [email protected] to request.
